NEW SPYWARE REMOVER

It’s rare that I change security programs. I’ve suggested you pay $40 for Ad-aware; I consider it a useful inexpensive program that protects your computer from intruders.

I read in PC magazine a few weeks ago about its Editor’s Choice for Spyware Removal. First, the article explained the various types of intruders, then what each can do to your computer. Afterwards the comparison discusses numerous competitors. The winner was Webroot Spy Sweeper 2.6. PC Magazine claimed Spy Sweeper caught more intruders, provided more information on them, gave you more choices on how to eliminate their threat than any competitor.

THE GOOD NEWS ABOUT IRAQ

This is a letter to his friends from Ray Reynolds, a medic in the Iowa Army National Guard, serving in Iraq. To The Point has determined its authenticity and updated its factual claims, verifying them with USAID and the Pentagon:

As I head off to Baghdad for the final weeks of my stay in Iraq, I wanted to say thanks to all of you who did not believe the media. They have done a very poor job of covering everything that has happened. I am sorry that I have not been able to visit all of you during my two (more…)

ABU GHRAIB AND TFM

The most personally frustrating aspect of the Abu Ghraib folies is that over a year ago I submitted an interrogation method to the Pentagon that was foolproof, immediate, effective, and humane.

It’s called TFM Interrogation, utilizing a nutritionally-engineered diet of Tryptophan-Free Meals. A TTP article discussing the method is now posted in the Classics section.

If the interrogation teams at Abu Ghraib and other detention centers had used TFM, the Red Cross could have been observing and taking all the pictures they wanted. Yet the Saddamites would have sung like canaries.

Instead, the interrogators chose far less sophisticated techniques. Some (more…)

CHINA’S THREE NO’S

Chinese are fond of compressing a social, political, or economic issue into a set of bullet points designated by the number of them. One of the most famous was “The Three Rounds,” encapsulating Chinese material dreams as they began emerging from the horror of Mao Tse Tung.

You were wealthy in post-Mao China if you possessed a watch, a bicycle, and a sewing machine — the three “rounds.”

That was a quarter-century ago. Comparing the dream of having The Three Rounds to China’s economy today gives you an idea of how amazingly far China has traveled in that period. China (more…)

WINKING — NOT BLINKING — IN FALLUJA

Has the United States blinked in Fallujah? The Arab media, and ours, have portrayed the withdrawal of the Marines from a portion of the city and their replacement with the "Fallujah Protective Army" as a victory for the insurgents.

"Covering their faces with checkered headscarves, militiamen loyal to a former Iraqi general jubilantly took to the streets of this battlescarred city yesterday to celebrate what they called a triumph over withdrawing U.S.Marines," wrote the Washington Post.

The apparent appointment, and then the swift dismissal of MajGen. Jassim Mohammed Saleh, who once served in Saddam’s Republican Guard, as commander of the (more…)

ARE WE ALL LIBERALS NOW?

Playwright and socialism-advocate George Bernard Shaw famously declared a century ago that “We’re all socialists now” – meaning that socialist ideas had so permeated English society they were advocated however disguised even by their opponents.

The current hysteria over the “abuse” of Iraqi prisoners is evidence that American society has become so infected with envy-appeasing liberalism that “We’re all liberals now.”

The defining essence of liberalism is a psychological compulsion to appease the envious. Liberalism is not a political ideology. It is an atavism, a regression to the primitive fear of the Evil Eye of Envy.

Susceptibility to envy what (more…)

THE ILLITERATE LEADER OF BRAZIL

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva – known as “Lula” – is functionally illiterate. He won’t read anything, any studies, reports, books et al. His aides have learned to give him only one-page bulleted summaries of any issue, then explain it to him verbally. He has no education and knows nothing of economics or business. Yet he has a photographic memory for events and what is said to him. He is incredibly articulate and persuasive in speech. Thus he is the perfect populist demagogue to rouse the poor Brazilian masses.

He was backed by key Brazilian business leaders who concluded (more…)

THE SASSER WORM — What You Can Do Now

I’m sure most of you have heard of the Sasser worm by now. This vicious piece of code hit the Internet some ten days ago. It’s been on television, newspapers and magazines. Some of you have been infected. Hopefully many of you will have followed the advice of these broadcasts and articles, so won’t need this column. I fear that many of you haven’t.

The Sasser worm only infects Windows 2000 and Windows XP. If you don’t have either of these versions of Windows, much of this column won’t apply to you. There will still be security advice that you (more…)

ARABS AND AZTECS

Cortez and his Spanish soldiers who conquered the Aztecs are known to history as “Conquistadors.” That label of “Conquerors” was applied to them by their contemporaries — but it originated a generation earlier. It was first used to describe the Spaniards who liberated their own country from Islam.

Arab invaders had swept across Spain in the early 700s, and it took centuries for the Spanish to kick them out. Cortez was not yet 10 years old when they were finally ejected from their last stronghold in Grenada in 1492. When Cortez first looked upon the pyramid temples of the Aztec (more…)

GOOD NEWS! KERRY RESCUED BY NEW YORK TIMES

Whew. That was close. Earlier this week, Hanoi John’s campaign looked like a goner.

First was the disastrous interview with Charlie Gibson on Good Morning America, where HJ came off as a truculent, arrogant jerk lying through his teeth.

Then came the $1000 Haircut, with HJ flying his personal hairdresser from Washington to a speaking event in Pennsylvania in Tuh-RAY-zuh’s $35 million private jet for a hair “touchup.” (Note: That’s what the press calculated — flying a Gulfstream V from DC to PA and back costs thousands of dollars alone.)

The third whammy came when the Village Voice ran an (more…)

TERROR ON THE DOLE

Four young British Muslims in their twenties – a social worker, an IT specialist, a security guard and a financial adviser – occupy a table at a fast-food chicken restaurant in Luton. Perched on their plastic chairs, wolfing down their dinner, they seem just ordinary young men. Yet out of their mouths pour heated words of revolution.

“As far as I’m concerned, when they bomb London, the bigger the better,” says Abdul Haq, the social worker. “I know it’s going to happen because Sheikh bin Laden said so. Like Bali, like Turkey, like Madrid – I pray for it, I (more…)

PANIC AS POLICY IN IRAQ

The root cause of our problems in Iraq is an excessively narrow vision, which has blinded us to the real strategic context, and therefore left us running after epiphenomena instead of developing a proper policy and a sensible mission. Nonetheless, our overwhelming military superiority has, so far, at least, made it possible for us to overcome a series of potential crises.

Like many others, I would have preferred our armed forces to pursue the murderers of the four security men, and to arrest or destroy them and their henchmen in Fallujah. The delay discouraged the long-suffering Iraqis and tortured them (more…)

LIBERATING SYRIA

As Syria is emerging as the principal facilitator of terrorism in both Israel and Iraq – see “Syria In The Gunsights” in last week’s TTP Weekly Report of April 23 – a Syrian democracy movement has just come in to being.

It is the Reform Party of Syria, dedicated to terminating the Assad tyranny and achieving freedom and democracy for the Syrian people. The RFS immediately recognized that the “terrorist attack” in Damascus earlier this week (April 27) was staged by the Syrian government as a ruse to divert attention from its being wedded to the very terrorists they claimed (more…)

A BRILLIANT NEW TOOL

All of you know of Google as a search engine; you probably use it. For a long while Google also has had a free toolbar for download. It appears as a toolbar on the top of your Internet Explorer page, along with Internet Explorer’s own toolbars.

The Google toolbar enables searches without having to navigate to www.google.com. While convenient and useful, I normally wouldn’t mention it in these columns, because it hadn’t until recently enhanced your computer’s security.

Google has come out with a second edition, and among several new features, it includes a pop-up killer.

I haven’t yet discussed (more…)

BUSH’S BIGGEST SUPPORTER

She’s pretending to be John Kerry’s biggest supporter, but no one is rooting for George Bush to win in November more than Hillary. She got behind the best straw candidate Bush could most easily demolish, Dizzy Howard Dean. When he imploded, she looked around and asked, “Who’s the next worst?” A no-brainer: obviously, an egomaniacal gigolo with more negatives than an Algebra student who fantasizes he could be another “JFK.”

As laid out in “Bitterness and Bad Karma” (Behind The Lines, December 14, 2003, currently posted in the Classics section), the only way Hillary can run in 2008 is for (more…)
