TYRANNY AND THE BOOGIEMAN OF ISLAM

Beauty of Loulan
As you can see, this woman is not Chinese. She’s European, a Celt. Although she looks young, she’s 4,000 years old, born before 2,000 BC – in what is now China. It turns out European Caucasians got to China before the Chinese.

The lady is known as the Beauty of Loulan, where her mummy was found in the ruins of an ancient city on the eastern edge of the Takla Makan Desert:
Taklmakan map
Pardon the French, but it’s a good map. Takla Makan means “You go in, you don’t come out,” which gives you an idea of how complete a desert (more…)

BAGHDAD MEMES

One of the most provocative, brilliant, fascinating, erudite, yet ultimately silliest books of recent times is Jared Diamond’s best-selling Guns, Germs, and Steel. The book is Diamond’s long attempt to answer a question put to him by a primitive tribesman in New Guinea, essentially, “Why do you guys in the West have such prosperity why we are still knee deep in pig poop?”

As a learned and persuasive hard-core environmental determinist, Diamond’s answer is: The West (whose inhabitants are two-digit IQ morons compared to the natural brain power of New Guinea natives) is the most culturally and technologically successful (more…)

SYNCBACKSE

There are many backup programs to choose from. I did not test dozens of contenders against one another. I took the advice of the computer magazines. Most rated SyncBackSE at or near the top. That’s the one I bought and it’s the one I’ll review.

SyncBackSE is manufactured by 3BrightSparks

By now I don’t have to take you step by step through paying and downloading the setup file.

Once downloaded, double-click the icon and the installation procedure begins.

The latest version is 4.01 but I haven’t bothered to upgrade my subscription yet.

Once installed, run the program. There are two (more…)

BACK TO AFRICA

serengetism_1.jpg

It’s very easy to get bitten by the African bug, the one that compels you to keep coming back to the most primeval place on our planet. I took this picture in the Serengeti in 1971, I’ve been going back to Africa every chance I got ever since, and by the time you read this I’ll be there again.

Africa has been a lot in the news this week. The G8 forgiving billions in debt by African countries; Little Bobby Mugabe, Zimbabwe’s depraved dictator, bulldozing thousands of poor people’s homes into rubble for not supporting him; President Bush hosting his (more…)

THE FIVE-STEP JET LAG SOLUTION

It’s summer, which means summer vacation, which means for some of you buzzing off to a distant time zone and getting wigged out on jet lag. For business travelers, jet lag can translate loss of mental acuity into loss of an important deal. For government folk, it can translate into failed negotiations or embarrassing misstatements to a foreign press.

I’ve used a five-step jet lag avoidance method for some years now. I’ve given it to a number of corporate CEOs, diplomats, Capitol Hill staffers, Congressmen and Senators. They tell me it works. It works for me. Here it is and (more…)

BOLIVIA’S ROAD TO NOWHERE

boltopo.jpg

Remember this map in Bye-Bye Bolivia last April?

A favorite protest tactic of Evo Morales’ socialist mobs is to block roads leading to Bolivia’s capital, La Paz. This may backfire big time. Serious candidates for the world’s scariest roads are the thin ribbons of asphalt that plunge off the Bolivian highlands to the lowlands. There are only two, and since the lowlands produce most of Bolivia’s wealth, they are the lifelines to all those protesting folk way up there in the Andes.

So don’t be surprised if the guys in the lowlands, the targets of Morales’ demands to nationalize (more…)

GENERIC TROJAN / ADWARE REMOVAL PROCEDURE

So many people have been having vicious malware attacks recently, attacks which have brought their computers down, that I am addressing the problem this week. I’ve discussed many of these items in earlier columns in bits and pieces. Apparently people don’t pay attention, don’t protect their computers, and go to dangerous sites.

In case you’ve caught a particularly wicked infection that is wreaking havoc with your computing, do the following.

Download the following items.

SEND SWAYR TO THE WHITE HOUSE

I received this terrific idea from TTPer Chris Landrum from Kennewick, Washington. It was in response to the No Apology article last week, describing how a number of folks at State and the Pentagon are sick and tired of our kowtowing groveling constant apologies to Moslems. Inspired by John Wayne’s famous line as Captain Nathan Brittles in She Wore A Yellow Ribbon – “Never apologize, son, it’s a sign of weakness” – these folks even sent a DVD of SWAYR to the White House.

Chris Landrum’s idea is to have a SWAYR to the White House campaign – hundreds, hopefully (more…)

FIGHTING THE COOKIE MONSTER

I discovered a free program that fills an important security need. Consequently, the column I promised on a second backup program will have to wait one week.

There’s something going on with cookies. I’m not sure what, but I guarantee you – somebody’s up to no good.

No, I don’t mean computer cookies – although that’s another story. I mean the cookies you get in the store on the bakery; they’re getting bigger. Am I the only one noticing this? I haven’t seen anything about it in the media – it’s as if there is an organized effort to completely (more…)

EUROPE NEEDS AMERICA’S FOUNDING FATHERS

Fortunately, there are few problems that have not been at least partially solved by others some time in the past — and this is true for the mess in which Europe now finds itself.

In 1786, the United States was in a somewhat similar situation. Near the end of the Revolutionary War, in 1781, the Articles of Confederation were adopted that formed the United States. It quickly became apparent the Articles of Confederation were fatally flawed, in that tensions were rising among the states and the economy had stagnated.

Several Founding Fathers, notably Alexander Hamilton and James Madison, called for (more…)

WESTERN COWARDICE AND THE TORTURE MASTERS

The cheerless creatures who rule the Islamic republic of Iran have developed a particularly wicked use of torture. Not only do they use the full panoply of physical and psychological horrors on their captives, but they then send the victims back into their homes and neighborhoods for brief periods of “parole” or “medical leave,” so that their friends and families can see with their own eyes the brutal effects of the torture.

The clear intent of this practice is to intimidate the population at large, to break the will of would-be dissenters and opponents, and to maximize the effects of (more…)

THE EMP ANNOYANCE

When Senator Jon Kyl (R-AZ), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Terrorism, Technology and Homeland Security, held a well-publicized hearing on a specific new type of terrorist threat last April, a lot of folks got scared. It turns out the threat is marginal. Instead of being called the EMP Terror, it should be called the EMP Annoyance.

EMP stands for Electro-Magnetic Pulse, caused by a nuclear bomb exploding not on or near the surface but high in the atmosphere. Kyl claims it’s the easiest way for America to be defeated by its enemies:

“A single Scud missile, launched from (more…)

THE BEST SHOW ON C-SPAN

I have a clear picture of the first time I met Chris Cox. It was a bright spring day in 1986. I was at the White House speechwriters’ shop on the 1st floor of the OEOB (the fabulously rococo Old Executive Office Building in the White House compound). It’s in the northeast corner with windows overlooking the West Wing. At the other end of the hall in the southeast corner was the White House Counsel’s office.

As I was in the doorway talking to a friend, this young fellow came down the hall – he couldn’t have been much more (more…)

SHALLOW THROAT

The self-outing of former FBI Deputy Director Mark Felt as "Deep Throat" still leaves the most important questions about Watergate unanswered.

Bob Woodward has said Felt was Deep Throat, and he was seen visiting Felt at his Santa Rosa, California home in 1999. What is cloudy is how much of a role Felt played in the Watergate saga. We know of Deep Throat not from the reporting Woodward and Bernstein did for the Washington Post in 1972, but from their book, "All the President’s Men."

But Woodward’s literary agent, David Obst, has said Deep Throat was not mentioned in the (more…)

HOW SERIOUS IS PRESIDENT BUSH IN THE WAR ON TERROR?

The Washington Post gets full marks for exposing the alarming lack of seriousness with which President Bush is now dealing with what is euphemistically called “The Global War Against Terrorism.”

Numerous key positions — including the State Department’s top slot, vacated at the end of last year by Cofer Black, and the head of the new counterterrorism center — are vacant, and the National Security Council is working hard to define our current strategy, led by the impressive Frances Townsend.

After nearly four years?

Indeed, if you talk to military officers engaged in the GWOT, more often than not you (more…)
