WE OWE US: The Real Case For Reparations

Late last month, on January 26, a lawsuit brought by descendants of slaves against companies whom they claimed profited from slavery was dismissed in federal court.

Unfortunately for those who thought that this act of judicial sanity will put an end to the “Reparations” cause, the case was dismissed “without prejudice,” which means the plaintiffs can file an amended complaint — which they intend to do.

Thus we are due shortly for another round of racist demands from “slave descendants” that billions of dollars be extorted from American taxpayers and deposited into their beggar bowls.

There is only one way (more…)

ENDING STALINISM IN EUROPE: The Heroic Diplomacy of John McCain

The saddest place in Europe today is the last outpost of Stalinism, the former Soviet Republic of Byelorussia now known as Belarus. It was full of hope when I was there in 1989. A freedom movement known as Adradzennie — “Resistance” — had been formed,. and I met its leader, Zenon Pazniak, in Minsk.

Zenon was sure that his country, which had suffered for so long under Russian colonialsm, would at last be a free democracy. Those hope were crushed when in July 1994, Alexander Lukashenko engineered his election as president of Belarus and proceeded to create a regime of (more…)

The French In Afghanistan

At a press conference in Kabul, Afghanistan on February 12, French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin announced that France will be “increasing its military participation in the international security force” in the war-stricken country. A NATO army unit called Eurocorps, composed by France, Germany, Spain, Belgium, and Luxembourg, will be deployed in Afghanistan by August. “We want to do more,” Villepin declared. “We want Eurocorps to take the lead.”

This was the wire story carried by AP. What was not disclosed is the particular nature of France’s participation. While other countries will be providing soldiers for Eurocorps in Afghanistan, France (more…)

The WMD Guinness Book Red Herring

Even in a time of an unceasing barrage of demagogic drivel from the Bush-haters, the manufactured flap over the “missing WMD” has got to set some kind of world record for red herring chutzpah.

As any long-time reader of mine knows, I have no great regard for the competence of the CIA. Its seedy alliance with the squishes at State to oppose Ahmad Chalabi has created a political morass in Iraq (see Childishness in Iraq, TTP August 7, 2003), and its unwillingness to help the democratic opposition overthrow the Mullacracy in Iran is disgraceful. It perversely backed Islamofascist Gulbuddin Hekmatyar (more…)

PHM: THE NEXT INSANITY

My friend Tony Perkins, who capably runs the Family Research Council, has been issuing dire warnings in the wake of Massachusetts’ outlaw Supreme Court creating an alleged right for homosexuals to marry out of constitutional thin air.

“Senator (Rick) Santorum (R-PA) was right when he predicted that demands to legalize polygamy would come in the wake of homosexual marriage,” Tony says. “What argument could the Massachusetts Supreme Court offer today against legalizing polygamy?”

Tony is right, but more right than he knows. For the loudest demands to legalize polygamy will not come from heterosexuals — it will come from homosexuals. (more…)

Xers

Tom Keene writes:

Someone quoting Strauss and Howe…awesome. Thank you. I have the Generations book, and always wished that they would have published a smaller version for quick-read reviews. Thank you for your summary.

Another positive aspect of Xers that I have found is their no fear attitude toward starting businesses. I believe they will go down as the most entrepreneurial generation in USA history.

I am leading edge Boomer…with two Millennial kids.

Tom —

I find your claim that Xers will be “the most entrepreneurial generation in USA history” to be extremely relevant to our economy today, particularly regarding (more…)

The Jihadis’ Primal Scream

Unless you depend on CNN for information – CNN totally and stunningly transformed the story, as Instapundit informed us yesterday – by now you have heard of the New York Times story about the discovery of a 17-page letter from Abu Musab al Zarqawi, written from Iraq in the middle of last month to the leaders of al Qaeda. It’s an extremely explosive story.

According to the Times – whose correspondent, Dexter Filkins, saw both the Arabic original and a military translation, and “wrote down large parts of the translation” – the letter is a sort of jihadist primal scream. (more…)

THE COMING PALESTINIAN CIVIL WAR

Ariel Sharon’s announcement on February 4, that the 7,500 Jews hunkered down amidst 1.5 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have to leave, is giving heartburn to Israel supporters like Mort Klein, head of Zionists of America.

Mort thinks Arik (Sharon’s nickname) has lost his nerve and is selling out. The reality is that Mort only sees the settler’s trees and not a sovereign Israeli forest. Sharon is a strategic genius and just as Machiavellian as ever.

What Sharon’s critics and all supporters of Israel need to understand is this: Sharon is building his Security Fence in order to precipitate (more…)

The Seventh Level

Guest Editorial

The Seventh Level
Michael Ledeen

Sorry to say, I haven’t reread Dante’s “Inferno” for some years, but I still remember his description of a very low and extremely unpleasant level of hell that houses traitors. Surely abject appeasers of evil qualify for the same treatment, and we must note grimly that three prime candidates have recently come forward to swell the ranks of that overheated realm: Senator Joe Biden of Delaware (D.), Senator Arlen Specter (R.), of Pennsylvania, and Congressman Bob Ney of Ohio (R.)

All have undertaken to “improve relations” between the United States and the theocratic (more…)

The Great Souled Man

Today is the 93rd birthday of the greatest American of the 20th century: Ronald Reagan. More than any other American of our day, he embodied the moral ideal personified by Aristotle as the man of Megalopsychia, the Great-Souled Man

The Great-Souled Man had a character of such integrity, inspiration, and achievement in the real world that his life expressed, for Aristotle, the Kalon, Moral Beauty.

Five years ago, I wrote the following tribute to this extraordinary man. It will be published in To The Point on every February 6th from now on.

THE CURSE OF THE XERS

To go beyond all the outraged wailing and shocked gnashing of teeth over the Super Bowl’s Nipplegate last Sunday (02/01), and understand what is really going on culturally, the place to begin is with William Strauss & Neil Howe’s 1991 book, Generations: The History of America’s Future – 1584 to 2069.

Strauss & Howe explain American cultural history as a repeating cycle of four generational types:

Idealist, motivated by abstract goals and principles;

Reactive, motivated by a cynical practicality;

Civic, motivated by a community spirit and can-do optimism;

Adaptive, motivated by the desire for compromise (more…)

You Don’t Have To Win To Win

If you were to describe in one word the Democrats fantasizing they can beat Bush in November, you would say Dean is a hothead, Clark an egomaniac, Sharpton a hustler, Edwards an ambulance-chaser, Kucinch a kook, Lieberman a moderate, and Kerry…?

The word that Democrats want to apply to Kerry is “electable.”  What does this mean?  Exactly nothing, for that’s all he is — that somehow he possesses some magical capacity to defeat GW.

The truth is that John Kerry isn’t from Massachusetts.  He’s from Oakland, California — because Gertrude Stein’s observation of Oakland applies so accurately to him:

“The (more…)

ISLAM’S ANTI-OSAMA

There is an ancient hadith or saying ascribed to Mohammed that goes:

The Prophet said, Peace be upon him: “O Allah, bless our Syria and our Yemen!” They said: “Ya Rasulallah, and our Najd!” He didn’t reply. He blessed Syria and Yemen twice more. They asked him to bless Najd twice more but he didn’t reply. The third time he said: “There [in Najd] are the earthquakes and the dissensions, and through it will dawn the epoch of Shaytan [Satan].”

As we discussed last week in The Soviet Saudi Union, Najd in central Arabia is the birthplace of Abdul Wahhab, the founder (more…)

Ayatollah Fidel

The clerical dictatorship in Iran wants the defeat of President Bush because his commitment to political democracy in Afghanistan and Iraq, and his endorsement of freedom for the people of Iran, threatens a regime that knows it is deeply unpopular.

Fidel Castro also wants to see Bush defeated because his determination to help democratic allies could threaten the emerging pro-Castro axis in Latin America. Both dictatorships have plans that could result in visible and sharp foreign policy setbacks that might cost President Bush the 2004 election.

Although vulnerable at home, the Iranian clerical regime has since 1979 been, in the (more…)

“Jack, what about South America?

I’ve received a number of TTPer inquiries asking, in effect, “Jack, what about South America?  There are 350 million people down there!  How come you never talk about them?”

This is a good point.  It’s because, in terms of geopolitical heft, South America doesn’t really matter.  I suppose I could write a piece on the arrogant blowhard who runs Argentina, Nestor Kirchner, and entitle it “Pompous on the Pampas.”  Everyone in South America knows the joke about the Argentines:  An Argentine is a Spanish guy who tries to speak English (with an appropriately affected English accent) and pretends he’s really (more…)
